Native and planted.
Distribution
Thinly scattered distribution on limestone & base rich soils in the lower reaches of the major river valleys
Habitats
Hedges and woodland margins.
Requirements
Prefers well-drained calcareous or neutral soils.
Recommendations
A species on the edge of its natural range in Durham and not particularly characteristic of the local flora. May be suitable as a hedgerow or woodland fringe species in small numbers in areas where it occurs naturally
Origins/provenance
The existing population is predominantly wild, though it is also commonly planted as a garden & landscaping shrub. Use plants of local provenance or FC seed zones 302 & 204 and avoid ornamental cultivars.
