Common Land

There are large areas of Common Land in County Durham ranging from extensive tracts of open moorland to small village greens. Common land is usually land in private ownership over which some individuals (commoners) have rights in common. These rights might include the right to graze livestock or take peat or turf for fuel.

All Common Land in the county has now been designated as Access Land.
