Areas of High Landscape Value

Outside of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty there are a number of areas which are designated in the County Durham Structure Plan and Local Plans as Areas of High Landscape Value (AHLV).

These include attractive, mature and undeveloped landscapes in the major river valleys of the Tees, Wear, Browney, Derwent and Team, together with much of the Durham coast and a number of coastal denes.

Development plans contain policies for the protection of the special character and quality of AHLVs.
